Janea: cuerpo, territorio y una nueva narrativa desde Guinea Ecuatorial

Desde Guinea Ecuatorial, Janea construye un lenguaje propio donde diseño, memoria y contemporaneidad conviven sin concesiones. Conversamos con su director creativo, Jose Aniceto Nvo Ebana Alene, sobre identidad, cuerpo, territorio y desafíos.

From Equatorial Guinea, Janea builds its own language where design, memory, and contemporaneity coexist without concessions. We spoke with its creative director, José Aniceto Nvo Ebana Alene, about identity, body, territory, and challenges.

¿Qué significa para vos diseñar y cómo influye en la identidad de Janea?

Diseñar, para mí, es un acto de traducción emocional y cultural. No se trata solo de crear prendas, sino de convertir memorias, tensiones, silencios y deseos en lenguaje visual. En JANEA, el diseño es una herramienta de afirmación íntima, pero contundente. Cada pieza nace desde una necesidad de expresar quiénes somos hoy, sin negar de donde venimos, y eso construye una identidad fuerte, honesta y profundamente humana.

What does designing mean to you and how does it influence Janea's identity? For me, designing is an act of emotional and cultural translation. It's not just about creating garments, but about turning memories, tensions, silences, and desires into a visual language. At JANEA, design is a tool of intimate yet powerful affirmation. Each piece is born from a need to express who we are today without denying where we come from, and that builds a strong, honest, and deeply human identity.

El nombre Janea transmite una sensación íntima y fuerte a la vez. ¿Cuál es su origen y qué representa para vos como creador?

Janea nace como un nombre que suena cercano, casi personal, pero que al mismo tiempo tiene presencia. Representa la dualidad que atraviesa toda la marca: vulnerabilidad y poder, suavidad y estructura, tradición y ruptura. Para mí, Janea es un espacio de libertad creativa donde lo personal se vuelve universal.

The name Janea conveys an intimate yet strong feeling. What is its origin and what does it represent to you as a creator?

Janea was born as a name that sounds close, almost personal, but that at the same time has presence. It represents the duality that runs through the entire brand: vulnerability and power, softness and structure, tradition and rupture. For me, Janea is a space of creative freedom where the personal becomes universal.

Guinea Ecuatorial tiene una identidad cultural compleja, atravesada por tradición, memoria y contemporaneidad. ¿Cómo dialogan esos elementos dentro de tu proceso creativo?

Guinea Ecuatorial no es un punto de partida folclórico, sino un territorio vivo. Trabajo desde la memoria, la oralidad, los rituales, los climas, los cuerpos, pero siempre en diálogo con el presente. "No busco reproducir la tradición, sino reinterpretarla, diálogo con el presente" La contemporaneidad aparece en las siluetas, en la construcción, en el lenguaje visual global con el que dialoga la marca.

Equatorial Guinea has a complex cultural identity, shaped by tradition, memory, and contemporaneity. How do those elements interact within your creative process?

Equatorial Guinea is not a folkloric starting point, but a living territory. I work from memory, oral traditions, rituals, climates, bodies, but always in dialogue with the present. "I do not seek to reproduce tradition, but to reinterpret it; I engage in a dialogue with the present." Contemporaneity appears in the silhouettes, in the construction, in the global visual language with which the brand converses.

¿Qué referencias visuales, materiales o emocionales aparecen de forma recurrente en tus colecciones?

Aparecen referencias a la arquitectura orgánica, a los paisajes ecuatoriales, a los textiles artesanales africanos llevados a un contexto de alta costura. "Emocionalmente, hay una constante búsqueda de equilibrio entre protección y exposición del cuerpo.

Me interesa mucho cómo un material puede contar una historia sin necesidad de ornamento excesivo"

What visual, material, or emotional references recur in your collections? There are references to organic architecture, equatorial landscapes, and African artisanal textiles brought into a haute couture context. "Emotionally, there is a constant search for balance between protecting and exposing the body. I am very interested in how a material can tell a story without the need for excessive ornament"

En tus diseños, ¿Cómo piensas la relación entre el cuerpo, el clima y el movimiento?

El cuerpo es el centro. Diseño pensando en cómo respira una prenda, cómo se mueve con el cuerpo y cómo responde al clima. Vengo de un contexto donde el clima no es neutro, y eso me ha enseñado a respetar la funcionalidad sin renunciar a la estética. "El movimiento no es un añadido: es parte de la construcción"

In your designs, how do you consider the relationship between the body, the climate, and movement? The body is a part central. I design thinking about how a garment breathes, how it moves with the body, and how it responds to the climate. I come from a context where the climate is not neutral, and that has taught me to respect functionality without giving up aesthetics. "Movement is not an addition: it is part of the construction"

¿Sentís que tu trabajo busca narrar una historia propia del país o más bien construir un lenguaje personal que dialogue con el mundo?

Ambas cosas no se excluyen. Mi trabajo nace desde Guinea Ecuatorial, pero no se queda ahí. Me interesa construir un lenguaje personal que pueda dialogar con París, Milán o Nueva York sin perder su raíz. No quiero que Guinea Ecuatorial sea vista como un límite, sino como un punto de potencia creativa.

Do you feel your work aims to tell a story specific to your country or rather to build a personal language that converses with the world? Both things are possible. My work originates in Equatorial Guinea, but it doesn't stop there. I'm interested in building a personal language that can dialogue with Paris, Milan, or New York without losing its root. I don't want Equatorial Guinea to be seen as a limit, but as a point of creative strength.

Dentro de la moda internacional, África muchas veces es leída desde clichés.¿Qué ideas o miradas te interesa cuestionar o resignificar a través de Janea?

Me interesa romper con la visión reduccionista de África como algo puramente artesanal o exótico. África también es conceptual, minimalista, futurista y sofisticada. Con Janea cuestiono esa mirada superficial y propongo una lectura mas compleja, elegante y contemporánea del continente.

Within international fashion, Africa is often read from clichés. What ideas or looks are you interested in questioning or resigning through Janea?

I am interested in breaking with the reductionist vision of Africa as something purely artisanal or exotic. Africa is also conceptual, minimalist, futuristic and sophisticated. With Janea I question that superficial look and propose a more complex, elegant and contemporary reading of the continent.

¿Cómo es producir moda en Guinea Ecuatorial hoy? ¿Qué desafíos y oportunidades encontrás en ese contexto?

Producir moda en Guinea Ecuatorial implica desafíos estructurales, pero también una enorme libertad creativa. No estar en el centro de la industria me permite pensar sin fórmulas impuestas. La oportunidad está en construir algo auténtico, desde cero, con una identidad clara, y proyectarlo internacionalmente.

What is it like to produce fashion in Equatorial Guinea today? What challenges and opportunities do you find in that context?

Fashion production in Equatorial Guinea involves structural challenges, but also enormous creative freedom. Not being at the center of industry allows me to think without imposed formulas. The opportunity is to build something authentic, from scratch, with a clear identity, and project it internationally.

¿Qué otras disciplinas arte, música, tradición oral, cine influyen en tu manera de crear?

La música es fundamental, especialmente la relación entre ritmo y emoción. El cine me influye en la narrativa y en la construcción de atmósferas. La tradición oral africana también está muy presente: esa forma de contar sin mostrarlo todo, de sugerir más que explicar.

What other disciplines of art, music, oral tradition, cinema influence your way of creating?

Music is fundamental, especially the relationship between rhythm and emotion. Cinema influences me on narrative and atmosphere building. The African oral tradition is also very present: that way of counting without showing everything, of suggesting more than

explaining.

Cuando alguien viste una prenda de Janea, ¿Qué experiencia o sensación te gustaría que se lleve? Me gustaría que sienta presencia. Que se sienta visto, fuerte, elegante, pero también cómodo consigo mismo. Que la prenda no lo disfrace, sino que lo revele.

When someone wears a Janea garment, what experience or feeling would you like her to take? I'd like you to have a presence. Make him feel seen, strong, elegant, but also comfortable with himself. That the garment does not disguise it, but reveals it.

¿Cómo definís el adn de Janea en una sola frase?

JANEA es alta costura contemporánea que conecta identidad, emoción y poder desde una mirada africana global.

How do you define Janea's dna in a single sentence?

JANEA is a high contemporary sewing that connects identity, emotion and power from a global African perspective.

¿Cuál es tu visión a largo plazo para la marca? Convertir a Janea en una casa creativa de referencia internacional, con presencia en pasarelas, alfombras rojas y proyectos culturales, sin perder su esencia ni su independencia creativa.

What is your long-term vision for the brand?

Make Janea an international reference creative house, with a presence on catwalks, red carpets and cultural projects, without losing its essence or creative independence.

¿Qué papel juega la sostenibilidad en tu trabajo?

La sostenibilidad no es una tendencia para mí, es una responsabilidad. Trabajo desde el respeto a los materiales, a los procesos y a las personas. Me interesa una moda consciente, duradera y con sentido.

What role does sustainability play in your work?

Sustainability is not a trend for me, it is a responsibility. I work from respect for materials, processes and people. I'm interested in a conscious, lasting and meanful fashion.

¿Qué crees que diferencia a Janea de otras marcas emergentes?

La coherencia entre discurso, estética y origen. Janea no busca parecerse a nadie; construye su propio camino desde una identidad clara y honesta.

What do you think makes Janea different from other emerging brands?

Coherence between speech, aesthetics and origin. Janea does not seek to resemble anyone; it builds its own path from a clear and honest identity.
