Ancestral Paraguay es una marca que nació mientras Camila Orué, su fundadora cursaba su último año de la Licenciatura en Diseño de Moda. Entonces, fue así como comienza a desarrollar una investigación como trabajo final. “A lo largo de la carrera, nos inculcaron la importancia de la sostenibilidad como el único camino viable, además de enseñarnos sobre la historia de la moda brasileña, donde se resaltaba la identidad cultural”, nos dice al respecto.

Ancestral Paraguay is a brand that was born while Camila Orué, its founder, was in her final year of the Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design. This is how she began to develop a research project as her final work. “Throughout the course, we were taught the importance of sustainability as the only viable path in fashion, in addition to learning about the history of Brazilian fashion, where cultural identity was highlighted,” she tells us about it.

Hablar sobre como cuando miraba a su propio país,  y veía una riqueza inmensa en tejidos artesanales y artesanías en general, pero la información sobre la historia de la moda en Paraguay era bastante difusa. “Yo nací y me crie en la triple frontera, en Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, y siempre admiré cómo Brasil tiene una identidad estética tan fuerte y bien definida”. Lo que la llevó a reflexionar sobre sus propia identidad, la globalización que la atraviesa y a investigar profundamente los tejidos artesanales de Paraguay. La pregunta era, ¿Qué necesitaba saber sobre qué técnicas llegaron con la colonización y cuáles ya existían en el territorio? Entonces es así como nació Ancestral Paraguay, lo que inicialmente fue concebido como un proyecto de investigación, pero que con el tiempo, por la necesidad de cubrir costos, comenzó a comercializar prendas hechas con tejidos artesanales.

Speaking about how, when she looked at her own country, she saw immense wealth in artisanal fabrics and crafts in general, but the information about the history of fashion in Paraguay was quite diffuse. “I was born and raised in the triple border, in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, and I always admired how Brazil has such a strong and well-defined aesthetic identity.” This led her to reflect on her own identity, the globalization that intersects with her, and to deeply investigate the artisanal textiles of Paraguay. The question was, what did she need to know about which techniques came with colonization and which already existed in the territory? And that is how Ancestral Paraguay was born, initially conceived as a research project, but over time, due to the need to cover costs, it began to commercialize garments made with artisanal textiles.

“Me inspiró la propia búsqueda de entender de dónde venimos, quiénes nos atravesaron/ influenciaron y para dónde vamos. La ancestralidad es el legado de quienes vinieron antes y en nosotros está la responsabilidad de conocer nuestra historia individual para comprender la magnitud e importancia del pasado”

Cada una de las piezas tiene una historia particular. Desde el trabajo con diferentes tejidos artesanales, y  como cada uno tiene sus propio protagonismo y contexto social único."También hay piezas que hemos desarrollado junto a comunidades durante años, pero que aún no han sido comercializadas” Paraguay tiene una gran diversidad de artesanos textiles. “He trabajado con comunidades indígenas como los Maká de Ciudad del Este, los Ava Guaraní de Acaraymi y los Ayoreo del Chaco”.  Actualmente, las piezas disponibles para la comercialización provienen de comunidades campesinas. Estas incluyen tejidos de algodón y técnicas que surgieron de la hibridación entre la herencia indígena y la colonización, como el encaje ju, el poyvi y la faja paraguaya. Estas artesanías son sostenidas mayoritariamente por mujeres y se transmiten de generación en generación.

"I was inspired by the very quest to understand where we come from, who influenced us, and where we are going. Ancestry is the legacy of those who came before us, and it is our responsibility to know our individual history in order to grasp the magnitude and importance of the past."

Each of the pieces has a unique story. From working with different artisanal fabrics, each of which has its own significance and unique social context. "There are also pieces we have developed alongside communities over the years but have not yet been marketed." Paraguay has a great diversity of textile artisans. "I have worked with indigenous communities such as the Maká of Ciudad del Este, the Ava Guaraní of Acaraymi, and the Ayoreo of the Chaco." Currently, the pieces available for sale come from peasant communities. These include cotton fabrics and techniques that arose from the hybridization between indigenous heritage and colonization, such as ju lace, poyvi, and the Paraguayan belt. These crafts are primarily sustained by women and are passed down from generation to generation.

The poyvi is a traditional Paraguayan fabric made from cotton. Its handcrafted production not only preserves cultural identity but also revalues the creative strength of the artisans, serving as a bridge between the past and the present.

Ancestral Paraguay ofrece tanto prendas de moda como materiales visuales y audiovisuales. Durante, ocho años de investigación, más el trabajo de campo que se  han llevado a cabo son la base que sostiene la autenticidad y calidad de su trabajo. “Cada pieza está profundamente conectada con la historia y las técnicas de las comunidades con las que trabajamos, lo que asegura que cada producto tenga un valor cultural genuino”

Asimismo, es importante destacar que mantienen una dinámica de comunicación horizontal con los artesanos, lo que permite colaborar de manera directa y equitativa en el desarrollo de sus productos. Este enfoque fomenta un intercambio de ideas y conocimientos, enriqueciendo el proceso creativo y asegurando un respeto mutuo por las tradiciones y habilidades de cada comunidad.

Exponer el lado sobre la filosofía de sostenibilidad es centrarse en dar visibilidad a los verdaderos protagonistas de su cultura. “Creemos en un modelo de trabajo que prioriza el tiempo y el esfuerzo necesarios para elaborar cada pieza, en contraste con la producción masiva y acelerada que impone el sistema capitalista. Además, buscamos resaltar el valor

del trabajo femenino y colaborar con la independencia económica de las mujeres artesanas”.

Ancestral Paraguay offers both fashion garments and visual and audiovisual materials. After eight years of research, along with the fieldwork that has been carried out, they form the foundation that sustains the authenticity and quality of their work. “Each piece is deeply connected to the history and techniques of the communities we work with, ensuring that each product has genuine cultural value.”

It is also important to emphasize that they maintain a horizontal communication dynamic with the artisans, allowing for direct and equitable collaboration in the development of their products. This approach fosters an exchange of ideas and knowledge, enriching the creative process and ensuring mutual respect for the traditions and skills of each community.

Highlighting the philosophy of sustainability focuses on giving visibility to the true protagonists of their culture. “We believe in a work model that prioritizes the time and effort needed to craft each piece, in contrast to the mass and accelerated production imposed by the capitalist system. Furthermore, we aim to highlight the value of women's work and collaborate with the economic independence of women artisans.”

Actualmente, trabajan exclusivamente con comunidades locales, fomentando relaciones a largo plazo con artesanos y artesanas, respetando sus tiempos y procesos creativos. También promueven la visibilidad de su trabajo, no solo en Paraguay, sino también a nivel internacional, compartiendo su legado cultural a través de  piezas y materiales.

Ancestral no es simplemente una marca de moda, sino el fruto de años de exploración práctica y de colaboración con comunidades de artesanos. Su enfoque se basa en la investigación y el esfuerzo por encontrar un equilibrio entre el trabajo manual y el estudio profundo de las técnicas y tradiciones. “Invitamos a quienes aún no conocen la marca a sumergirse en nuestra propuesta, que va más allá de la venta de prendas, al ofrecer una visión que conecta el contexto social, cultural y político de Paraguay a través de la artesanía”.

Currently, they work exclusively with local communities, fostering long-term relationships with artisans, respecting their timing and creative processes. They also promote the visibility of their work not only in Paraguay but also internationally, sharing their cultural legacy through pieces and materials. Ancestral is not just a fashion brand, but the result of years of practical exploration and collaboration with artisan communities. Their approach is based on research and the effort to find a balance between handcrafted work and a deep study of techniques and traditions. "We invite those who are not yet familiar with the brand to immerse themselves in our proposal, which goes beyond selling garments, offering a perspective that connects the social, cultural, and political context of Paraguay through craftsmanship."
